Capturing portraits that reveal the depth and warmth of your most cherished moments.

Photographer Amy Nelson-Blain specialises in handcrafted cyanotype prints. Her work is a unique fusion of digital and analog artistry, creating portraits that are as much a piece of art as they are a memory, infusing each project with a creative and soulful touch.
Cyanotypes are a historic alternative photographic printing process invented in 1842. They blend art and science to produce hauntingly beautiful, one-of-a-kind prints.

The Alchemy of the Cyanotype Print.
I invite you to watch the film above for a detailed look into my process. Every photograph on my website is a toned cyanotype print, and it’s this technique that defines the unique look and feel of my work. Crafting botanical toned cyanotype prints allows me to slow down and truly connect with my art. This technique involves coating paper with light sensitive iron salts, then exposing to UV light (or sunlight), and rinsing in water to reveal vibrant Prussian blue images. Each print is then thoughtfully toned with botanicals, shifting the classic Prussian blue into warmer earthy hues.
My process bridges the gap between the modern and the historic. This intentional, hands on approach ensures that the images we create are not just viewed on a screen, but felt in the hands, timeless treasures that celebrate your story with a romantic, artistic flair.
From capturing the tender moments of motherhood and family, celebrating love and connection, or crafting striking headshots and professional portraits. Each session is designed to produce beautiful, authentic images that celebrate the essence of who you are, all while maintaining a carefree and enjoyable atmosphere.
FAQ
Why do you create cyanotype prints from your photography?
I began my photography journey in high school, shooting on film and developing black and white prints in the darkroom. I've spent most of my career shooting digital and felt burnt out after many years. Returning to these alternative processes has reminded me why I fell in love with photography: photos are meant to be tactile, held in your hands and displayed in your home, bringing them to life. This brings me immense joy, keeping me inspired and excited about my craft. When properly processed and stored, a cyanotype print can last for generations, becoming a true family heirloom.
What is the booking and cancellation policy?
A non-refundable deposit of $300 AUD is required before your booking is confirmed. Final invoice will be sent after your session. Payment in full is required before the final prints are delivered. No refunds, exchanges or re-shoots will be granted after the final product has been exchanged. Sales on printed products are considered final.
I am happy to reschedule due to illness or other urgent circumstances, please give at least 48 hours notice. Less than 48 hours notice may incur additional fees. Please get in contact ASAP so that we can book a new date.
When do I receive my prints / photos ?
Turn around is usually within 2 weeks for delivery of your prints as each print takes several days to produce. Because each print is toned with natural botanicals, no two pieces are ever identical. You aren’t just receiving a photograph; you are receiving a one-of-a-kind original. It’s a slow crafted heirloom, made by hand and heart.
Can we have the digital RAW files from the session?
No, the digital raw files are not provided to clients. My process is delivering a handcrafted print, a precious heirloom intended to be displayed in your home. If you are wanting to receive hundreds of digitally edited photos, then I am not the photographer for your needs. I believe in quality over quantity and my services reflect this.
What do I wear to my session?
I recommend bringing at least 2 outfit options on the day and I will give you guidance on what is best to wear while keeping it authentic to your personal style.
- Colour Palette: opt for neutrals (beige, white, navy, grey) or muted tones (jewel tones, pastels) that complement each other rather than matching exactly. The final prints will not be in colour but if you feel more comfortable wearing brighter colours you may.
- Clothing Choices: Select solid colours to keep the focus on the face. Simple dresses, button-down shirts, sweaters, and tailored blazers work best. Textures are also fine.
- Avoid: Large logos, busy patterns, neon colours, and brand names, which can make photos look dated.
- Fit and Comfort: Wear clothes that fit well - neither too tight nor too baggy - to ensure confidence and easy movement.
- Layering: Add depth and texture with jackets, scarves, or sweaters, which also allows for quick outfit changes.
- For Men: Long-sleeved button-down shirts are often more flattering than t-shirts or polos.
- For Women: Consider V-necks to lengthen the neck, and avoid tops that blend with skin tones.
- Preparation: Try on outfits in advance, ensure they are ironed or steamed, and keep accessories simple.

I'm a bit of a romantic old soul, my happy place is behind the camera, where good light and genuine connections come together. My style blends natural moments with an editorial touch, seeing the intimate 'in between' moments, searching for light and beauty in unusual places and witnessing the incredible connection between souls, creating images that are both authentic and artfully composed. I’m passionate about telling stories of love, partnership, and human connection through beautifully honest, emotional images. Putting my heart and soul into every final print, I feel incredibly proud and humbled to do what I love every day.
My photographic career has spanned over 15+ years and throughout that time I have worked in different genres such as commercial fashion, weddings and events.
